Apple is reportedly developing its own modem for iPhones

Apple is pursuing its goal of no longer relying on any third-party vendor for its core electronics and is currently considering designing its own modem for the iPhone.

Many electronics manufacturers use components and technologies from other companies. For example, in photography, many brands use Sony sensors for their products. In the mobile market, with a few exceptions, manufacturers are turning to Qualcomm for their chips ...

Apple would seek to manufacture its own modem for the iPhone

Apple aims to be as independent as possible. That goes through the making of their own chips, their own GPU - these have appeared in the new iPad Pro - and soon, now, according to a Bloomberg report, this could also translate into use of homemade cellular modems for future iPhone.

It is a job posting published by Apple that seems to go in this direction. The Cupertino company is looking for engineers with skills in both hardware and software for wireless components and with LTE and Bluetooth. And this is not the first time we hear about this eventuality. At the beginning of last year, a similar rumor was already circulating.

This could happen in 2020

It's impossible to know if a Modem made by Cupertino will come into existence, or when, but the latest news is that Apple still plans to buy from Intel for its 5G modems. Home-made chips could not arrive until after 2020.
