You want to keep Windows 7? It will be necessary to pay for the updates

Windows 7, despite the arrival of Windows 10, still remains used significantly. For users to continue to use it, Microsoft has scheduled security updates that will become available from early 2020.

Although Microsoft wants all businesses to upgrade to Windows 10, this is not yet the case. But the company is patient, and while waiting for this migration, it has provided security updates for companies. But it will be necessary that the latter pay to benefit in a few months.

Windows 7: Paid security updates from 2020

So it is not until 2023 that the updates should stop for Windows 7. Microsoft does not want to rush things because Windows 7 is the second most used version in the world at 42% versus 43% for Windows 10.

We understand better the decision of Microsoft, especially as it is the companies that are resistant, because they fear the costs of updating and also use applications specifically dedicated to Windows 7.

However, Microsoft also wants to be a winner in the process, while wanting to encourage companies to migrate to Windows 10. Security updates will therefore pay off from January 2020. Something rather unusual, this time Microsoft has communicated transparent way.

We already know that these Extended Security Updates (ESU) will be marketed individually for each PC. It will be necessary to add an annual supplement to the price of the subscription. The targets of this offer are Windows 7 Pro and Enterprise Editions users who have important licensing agreements.

ESU support will end in January 2023. It is therefore still recommended to migrate to Windows 10, but this extension of security updates may be of interest to those who want to amortize their migration costs over the medium term.
