According to the “European Computer Vision Facial Recognition Market Research Report 2019” from EOU Think Tank, the size of China's computer vision facial recognition market in 2018 was 15.17 billion yuan ($2.1 billion). According to estimates, it will reach 53 billion yuan ($7.5 billion) in 2021. In addition, the compound annual growth rate is 53%. The market size is also growing rapidly.

According to recent reports, Chinese citizens will now have to use facial recognition to sign up for internet services. The Chinese government announced in September that residents applying for a new mobile or internet device will have to undergo a face scan by telecom operators.

According to MIIT, this is part of its efforts to “safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of citizens in cyberspace”. The new legislation will also prohibit residents from transferring their mobile numbers to other people. According to Quartz, China appears to be the first country to require facial recognition to subscribe to mobile and Internet services.
