Google released the Pixel 2 XL back in October 2017 which makes this device a little over four years old. Considering the age of this smartphone, Google will not officially release the Android 12 update for this device. However, some private developers from XDA have a way around the situation. The Android 12 now works perfectly on the Google Pixel 2 XL. ProtonAOSP has adapted Android 12 to Google Pixel 2 XL. The overall design style of this custom ROM is consistent with Android 12 and it also uses the "Material You" design language.
The Material You language design emphasizes the consistency of design. The sliding notification bar, icons, keyboard, etc. are all in the same colour as the wallpaper. The entire system maintains a very high consistency in color. In addition, the animation effect of Android 12 has also been greatly improved, sliding as smooth as butter, typical non-linear animation.
The important thing is that this dynamic upgrade is system-level. Google’s own Chrome and third-party applications have already been used, and the experience has given the whole smartphone a whole new look.
After the update, Google Pixel 2 XL's basic features like the cellular radio interface layer (RIL), camera, GPS, Bluetooth, and fingerprint reader are working perfectly. As of now, encryption isn’t functional and SELinux is set to permissive mode. This raises serious security concerns. However, these developers have done a great job adapting the Android 12 for the really old smartphone. It is quite difficult to get a fully functional ROM on an old smartphone.
How to download the unofficial Android 12 for Google Pixel 2 XL
Unfortunately, this is not an official update thus it is not going to roll out to Google Pixel 2 XL devices. However, there are other ways with which users can flash this ROM. To flash this ROM, ProtonAOSP provides a factory image that allows users to directly flash the system using Fastboot. Nevertheless, users need to apply caution when flashing this ROM. In fact, if you are not a tech nerd, do not attempt to flash the ROM yourself. Also, there may be a need to re-partition and this will delete the data in the device. Thus, users need to back up their data before attempting the upgrade. With unofficial ROMs, sensitive information may be vulnerable.
