Tony Weber, CEO of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), said: "The market is clearly leaning towards zero-emission technologies". FCAI is the top automotive industry in Australia. This is the first recognition of the status of new-energy electric cars by the Federal Association of Automobile Manufacturers. It has long been less bullish on electric cars due to Toyota's dominance. While Ford and Toyota temporarily outsell Tesla, the harbingers of the future of electric cars are already showing.
Electric cars have had a low market share in Australia's entire car market so far this year - 2.7 per cent. However, the September data sends a clear signal to the market that electric cars are starting to make history.
Among the nearly 1 million new cars in Australia this month, the proportion of electric cars hit 7.7%. The sales of hybrid models are 4616, a decrease of 33.7% compared with September 2021. Also, the sales of plug-in hybrid models are 525, a year-on-year increase of 74.4%. Tesla delivered 5,969 vehicles in Australia in September. This is almost double its previous best performance and ranking seventh on the list. Last month, the Model Y was Australia's best-selling SUV with 4359 deliveries, and third overall in new vehicle sales. Only the Toyota Hilux (5170) and Ford Ranger (4890) sold more than the Model Y.
It is worth mentioning that more than 60% of all electric cars sold in Australia are Tesla. This is very similar to the situation in the US electric vehicle market to some extent. Analysts expect the BYD Atto 3 and MG ZS EV to be the second and third places in the EV race. They are behind Tesla but well ahead of their rivals. However, MG deliveries didn't actually start until mid-to-late September, so Q3 numbers will be very low.
In addition, some luxury models also have good Q3 performance, such as:
- Polestar 2 - 85
- Mercedes EQB-82
- BMW iX-70
- Kia EV6-60
- Volvo XC40 Recharge - 49
- Genesis GV60-46
- Porsche Taycan-27
- BMW i4-21
- Nissan LEAF-16
- Audi e-tron - 13
- Mercedes-Benz EQS-11
