The screen of the Huawei Mate X would be victim of the same problems encountered by the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The screen break very easily, and the repairs are worth half the price of the smartphone.
The technology of foldable smartphones is still in its infancy. This is reminded by numerous reports from China around the Huawei Mate X. The manufacturer's first foldable smartphone was launched in China in November 2019. And we expected a lot, especially in terms of durability - compared to the solution chosen by Samsung on its Galaxy Fold. However, according to several videos and user feedback, the foldable smartphone screen is just as fragile as its competitor.
Huawei Mate X 1st-gen foldable appears to break, too
SlashGear site reported a list of user videos compiled by the YouTube channel Fold Universe. We discover several screen failures in the videos. In some of it, the screen is completely unusable. While in other cases, only part of the screen stops working. In others, a thick black line appears in the middle of the slab.
Finally, a video shows a seemingly functional screen, but the touch part of which has failed. The Mate X sold rather well in China where it quickly found itself out of stock. But, the new owners of this $2,400 smartphone have to face the high cost for replacing the screen. It costs about $1,000 which is almost half the price of the device.
The screen change on the Galaxy Fold costs only $145 the first time. And the repair price remains more reasonable outside the warranty since a replacement costs a maximum of $550 outside the warranty.
It is worth to mention that Huawei will unveil two new foldable smartphones in 2020. The already awaited Mate Xs will improve the resistance of the first foldable smartphone of the manufacturer. While the second foldable phone will be placed in competition with the alleged Galaxy Z Flip.
