Meanwhile, a $40 phone with 256MB RAM and 3.5-inch screen

We've been discussing the high-end phones and the flagships here at GizChina, but India's Lava today launched a rather entry-level (for the lack of a more suiting word) phone in the Iris 325.

The device costs 2,599 INR (US$41), and features specifications which are perhaps second to your first ever Android phone. It has a 3.5-inch screen (480 x 320 pixels), a dual-core processor (of unspecified make, presumably an MT6572 variant), 256MB of RAM and 512MB of on-board storage, out of which 200MB is available for apps.

Now, this doesn't sound like something that could even make for a decent secondary phone, but Lava is perhaps targeting a whole other market with this one. The phone does camera too; it has a 2 mega-pixel sensor on the rear and a VGA front (despite lacking support for 3G networks -- it's certainly only for your selfies).

The phone runs Android KitKat out of the box, which is perhaps more of a need than anything else. This is certainly one of the more non-interesting phones that have launched in the otherwise very 'happening' Indian smartphone scene. A good example of a more interesting phone could be the Yu Yureka which we recently reviewed.
