OnePlus 5 and 5T Receive Project Treble Support in Latest Oxygen OS Beta

The latest OxygenOS beta has brought about good news for the OnePlus 5 and 5T owners. The update has brought about support for project Treble which was not a core part of the phones when they were launched last year. It's quite surprising to see that OnePlus is providing Treble support to older devices even though they were against doing so previously. Some users had even launched a petition for implementing Project Treble.

For those of you who are not familiar with project Treble, here's a quick overview:

• Project Treble is Google's initiative to bring faster updates to Android devices across the world.
• Less code reworking on the part of the manufacturer
• Enables manufacturers to push updates to their devices much faster than previous versions of Android like Nougat.
• In technical terms: Creating a layer of abstraction between the Vendor implementation and the Android OS, allowing the OS to be reworked and updated independently.

Google has even made it mandatory for devices sporting Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box to support Project Treble. OnePlus has been prompt and punctual with the updates and security patches on their devices. The inclusion of Project Treble would allow for even faster updates than before.

This is just a beta update to the Oxygen OS, and OnePlus will take a while to roll out the official, stable update. But here's the catch. Sometimes, the features rolled out in a beta update are removed from the stable update. So there might be a chance that OnePlus pulls Project Treble out of the stable update altogether. That would be quite saddening. It would not be as sad as waiting for brands like Samsung and HTC when it comes to delivering updates.
