Pixel 2 & Pixel 2 XL will get Software & security update till 2020, says Google

Google announced its second generation Pixel phones alongside the Google Pixelbook just a few hours ago. The new Pixel phones come with significant improvements over the first generation Pixels, boasting of some added features with some removal as well.Specifically, Google is banking on the latest and greatest Android Oreo, its improved Google Assistant, and of course, the best camera it has to offer till date to sell the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

We already covered the major specs and features of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL here, but what we failed to mentioned is that Google’s tech specs page for the 2 new Pixel devices expressly stated that buyers of these devices would be able to receive Android software updates and security updates for three years from the time of release.

With this promise, you should expect to see the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL to be upgraded to at least Android R, and that should be expected to happen around this time in 2019.

Google only offered users of previous Nexus devices as well as the first generation Pixel phones two years of Android OS update with three years of security patch updates.

If this promise is effectively implemented, then it means Google would have measured up with Apple which offers similar support to its older devices up to 3 years.
