Tesla Model Y high-performance version manufactured in China offers longer battery life
Tesla has been doing quite well in the electric vehicle market. Owners of the Chinese-produced Model Y high-performance version discovered that this version uses a new 12V lithium-ion battery. According to reports, Tesla Model Y entered the Chinese market for the first time on January 1, 2021. The official delivery of this car in China commenced on January 18 this year.
Currently, Tesla sells three versions of Model Y in China. These models include the rear-wheel-drive version, the long-range version, as well as the high-performance version. Among them, the high-performance version accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in only 3.7 seconds. In addition, the top speed of this car is 250 km/h. The NEDC cruising range is 566 km and the price is 387,900 yuan ($60,949).
Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory has just started the delivery of a high-performance version of the Chinese Model Y. After checking the power configuration of this version of the car, some car owners found that Tesla had replaced the 12V lead-acid battery with a 12V lithium-ion battery. This 12V lithium-ion battery is much smaller than the conventional lead-acid batteries used in gasoline cars. This allows Tesla to save space in the front of the car. At the same time, this battery also has a longer life cycle.
The 12V lithium-ion battery on the Chinese Model Y high-performance version is similar to the battery on the Tesla Model S Plaid version. Before Tesla China started the delivery of the Chinese-produced Model Y high-performance version, Tesla just raised the price of the Model Y rear-wheel-drive version in China from the previous 276,000 yuan ($43,367) to 280,752 yuan ($44,114).
Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory to produce over 1 million vehicles per year
Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory is moving towards the goal of producing more than 1 million vehicles per year. The Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory is the company’s first manufacturing plant in China. It is also China’s first electric car plant wholly owned by a foreign automaker, and the third Gigafactory built by the company in the world. The plant currently produces Model 3 and Model Y. Starting in January this year, with the start of mass production of the Chinese Model Y, Tesla's production and sales in China have seen faster growth.
Earlier, there were reports that as Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory start production of the Model Y, it should help the company achieve its 2021 production goal. The goal is to produce 550,000 electric vehicles, including 300,000 Model 3 and 250,000 Model Y.
In August this year, Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory annual output of Model Y and Model 3 hit 450,000. There are speculations that the Gigafactory may soon surpass the company's factory in Fremont, California. If this happens, it will become the world's largest electric vehicle factory.
