The invite system is what caused OnePlus a lot of trouble, but at the same time gave the brand the viral popularity it needed. News is that the brand has decided to do away with the system for their current flagship phone.
Starting midnight on 5th December, you will no longer be needing any invites to be able to purchase the OnePlus 2.
Back when the system was first introduced (and criticised), OnePlus maintained that it was the invite system that allowed the company to manage inventory and get an idea of how much demand there was for their phone (the OnePlus One, in 2014). With more options being available, and with OnePlus (presumably) turning into a company that now has a better ability to hold stock, the invite system is going for good... but only for the OnePlus 2.
You will still need to have an invite to be able to get a OnePlus X (review)... besides if you buy it between December 5-7. There's some other discounts that OnePlus is holding for the season. From the forum post by co-founder Pei:
