China's most popular social networking/messaging app aka WeChat today announced that the multi-utility app would allow 'official accounts' with more than 100k followers to advertise on the platform.
Although WeChat is simply massive in China, the app doesn't have the largest following in many other markets so if you're thinking, 'what are official accounts?', you're perfectly normal. WeChat allows organizations to register for public accounts aka official accounts, which they can then use to send messages to followers. Organizations including small stores, celebrity PR and such therefore make use of these official accounts to spread their reach to users on the move.
According to Tech in Asia, these ads will not show on personal messaging windows, but instead, will show only when followers of an official account visit the full page posts from messages sent to them.
I've started using WeChat and it's a pretty neat method to stay in touch. However, I don't see WeChat replacing the likes of WhatsApp or Kik, because the international version of the app simply doesn't have as many features as the Chinese version. And, lets face it: the Chinese have a dearth of choice when it comes to social networking, etc. (read: the Great Firewall of China).
Anyway, if WeChat still does catch your fancy, you might want to give this Tech in Asia piece a read: 5 ways China’s WeChat is more innovative than you think.
