Oppo Find X2 promo video teases Omni-Directional AF

The recently released Oppo Find X2 and Find X2 Pro came with Sony's latest sensor with a 2x2 0n-chip lens. Oppo calls this new technology Omni-Directional Focus and that's a reason behind it. Today, the Chinese firm shared a promo video touting the advantages of this new focus tech. However, the teaser aims more at entertainment than education.

When the industry unveiled Dual Pixel Autofocus, it was a massive improvement over basic PDAF (phase-detection Auto-focus). Essentially, in Dual Pixel every pixel has two photodiodes. In other words, it can be used for focus detection, unlike regular phase-detection AF where only a small number of pixels are used.

However, Dual Pixel also has its disadvantages. Since it split pixels into two diodes, the tech focuses on vertical patterns. When it is used with horizontal patterns, the technology struggles. Omni-Directional AF, in counterpart, does not have such limitations.

Quad-Bayer already splits each "pixel" into four photodiodes. This allows phase detection to work in both vertical and horizontal directions. Moreover, most Quad Bayer sensors can treat each photodiode as a pixel for higher resolution.

Oppo Find X2 Pro is now the king of DxO chart

Thanks to this advanced technology Oppo Find X2 Pro is now the top-rated phone in the DxO charts. The high-end smartphone now shares the crown with the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro and its 108MP camera.
